Bar Fly Meets Girl, Interrupted in a Tough and Funny First Novel
About an Ex-Prep School Girl Turned Stripper Who Lands in the Nut house

Bolt Risk
A Novel by Ann Wood

In the summer of 2004, a slender novel by a small town reporter with a scandalous reputation was published in a signed and numbered, limited edition. Mysteriously, it kept ‘disappearing’ from local libraries; pinched, it was discovered, by young people who found that it reflected their fantasies of escape and offered a vicarious vision of a contemporary descent into hell. Honest, unpretentious and real—and packed with attitude—it was written by a woman who had lived the life she was writing about. Although a prep school and Bennington graduate, the author had produced a book that was the opposite of anything that might have issued from a creative writing or MFA program: crude, rude and raw, the writing was intentionally simple, and did not pretend to offer redemption.

Bolt Risk is a post modern tale of love, lust, drugs and rock music set in the sleazy world of LA strip clubs, phone sex factories, groupies, and life on the fringes of Hollywood. The protagonist is a nameless ex-prep school outcast who becomes a stripper and whose appetites and behavior land her in a mental hospital . . . an alternately absurd and terrifying sojourn reminiscent of Girl, Interrupted.

It’s a rough book full of profanity and dark humor. The central character doesn’t ask for forgiveness, understanding or pity; truth be told, she seems to dare the reader to care at all. Bolt Risk is a wild and unflattering celebration of bad choices told in a tough and singular voice, reminiscent of Charles Bukowski’s.

In fact, had the dirty old man been a beautiful young woman, Bolt Risk might have been his first novel.
